Match Report – Devon B 24-20 Bristol B

Firstly I want to say congratulations to everyone who went to Yarmouth. An awesome achievement and it will go down in history. Bristol B 2008 National Champions! Brilliant!!!  Onto our second league game of the year.  I had high hopes going into this game that we would finally put one over this team. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but we gave it a real good go.  We quickly found ourselves 5-0 up and the Devon lads were the quietest I ever heard them.  As always with tough opposition we couldn’t keep the momentum going but did manage to win the first set 7-4. Moving into the second set which too and frowed all the way, eventually seeing Devon win it 6-5 and close the gap to 10-12.  We were still in control and I was confident we could see it through, another 3rd set 6-5 win for Devon found us leading by just the one frame at 17-16.  This was exactly the same situation as last season and I had hoped we could change what happened by seeing out a result. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be with Devon winning the set 8-3 to set up a repeat win from last year. Very disappointing on the day, given it was our first game since our National success.  However saying that I do believe we are nicely set up for a successful defence of our region 6 title which we want to retain this year.  We are four points up on last year and I believe we should set our sights on bettering our points target from 2007.  This should see us win the region for the second year in a row.

Man of the Match

Congratulations to everyone who had a good day in a hard venue to play. No four out of fours this month but three out of fours for Jason Gilmour, Kevin Smith and Jon Millard.  All played equally well and you can see the confidence ouzing from the National win.  My man of the match goes to Kevin Smith purely for the two awesome doubles he played to win one of his frames. Different class mate!

Next Match

Our next game is away against Dorset and in simple terms we need to get back to winning ways.  Lets not get complacent with us being National Champions. Yes we are a classy outfit but we still have to do the hard work! In fact lets show teams exactly why we are National Champions.  Using the 2007 results as a guide we beat these guys 27-17 and with there results so far this season, I’ve seen no reason why we cant better that score.  I would like to see us better or equal all of our scores from last season and so far in the first two games we have achieved that.  Lets get a big win lads and a comprehensive last set display.  Im on holiday in Las Vegas for this game so I have given all of the details to Kevin Smith for this match.  Ricky will continue to help out Kevin if he can make the game.  Good luck boys and remember lets win big!!
